  New 5 Needles Owner
Bought His Home
Site And Sight Unseen.
Is this one of those “believe it or not” stories?
New York insurance executive Nick von Moltke purchased
his new home in 5 Needles without ever seeing or visiting Schweitzer. We met Nick at a 5 Needles owners’ event, where he told us that— incredibly—this was the first time he had visited Schweitzer and 5 Needles in person.
Really, Nick? You bought sight unseen?
Yep, it’s true. My wife Nina and I plus our two sons and daughter are all avid skiers. But because the company I run
is in New York City, we live there. So, we started looking for a mountain community with great skiing. Believe me, we looked everywhere: Australia—I was born there—Canada, the East Coast, as well as Europe. I played semi-pro hockey and worked for 10 years in Europe, where I met Nina, who’s German.
That’s a wide range of places.
We didn’t stop there. We knew the West had unbeatable terrain and ski conditions. We scouted all the big, well-known resorts, but decided we wanted smaller, not bigger. Many resorts are so sprawling, they have no heart. They’re a mob scene. We also wanted somewhere “up and coming, not already there.”
How did Schweitzer get on your list?
I have a ski buddy who grew up in Calgary and knew Schweitzer well. We have similar tastes in skiing. He recommended Schweitzer by saying it had “legit terrain” and was challenging in a good way with lots of diverse runs. I like expert terrain, but am not an extreme skier—narrow gullies are not for me. I also like the adventure of backcountry skiing and do a little Nordic as well. It’s all here at Schweitzer.
How does the rest of your family like their snow?
My daughter wants groomed runs. My son loves steep and fast, moguls and backcountry. The other son is in-between. Nina really is an expert skier. She can handle most anything.
Now that you’ve actually seen Schweitzer, what else appeals to you?
Schweitzer’s method of development. Everything in moderation, but with higher quality in mind. The Humbird hotel is a great example of that.
What about the town of Sandpoint and the lake?
I didn’t know about them before, but now that I’ve seen them, experienced them a little, and heard everybody rave about them, we’re going to increase our visits to include the summer, too. I’m into sailing, but being aware that the incredible StanCraft wooden speedster you featured is made locally... Hmmmm.
Besides spending more time at Schweitzer and Sandpoint, what else is in your future?
Actually, I’m fixated on biking across the U.S.—sometime in the next five years.
